Pokemon 2000: The Power Of One (mild -)

Phen and I watched this tonight; while it was nice to experience as an artifact of the license, I read up on the localization changes and couldn't help but feel resentful. AFAIK, the original casts Ash as the person who happened to be in the right place/time to step up and do the hero thing (which he's able to do with a lot of help), the dub makes him out to be a Chosen One called out by name who fulfills the prophecy because he's Just That Great

There's a pretty significant difference: "Well, it could've been anyone else in my position, but I'm in the middle of it, so I need to give it my best shot" versus "I, specifically, was ordained by God to perform this grand task." The latter feels like a marketing move to me: the world suddenly revolving around Ash (combined with the similarly dub-emphasized will-they/won't-they with Misty) acts as a hook for people to continue following the TV series

Through the Adventures in the Orange Islands arc, no less! A fate I wouldn't wish upon my worst enemy!

(Otherwise the film was a suitably flashy anime spectacle and I enjoyed Lugia's introduction; I remember how feverish the wait for Gen2 was, and can only imagine what audiences must've felt seeing Togepi, Donphan, Marill, Slowking, then suddenly THIS)

Pokémania Catch(-'em-)all Thread

Literally every third work of media I take in these days appears to be Pokemon-based, so for consistency's sake I've decided to consolidate future thoughts about them into a single thread that can be muted at your leisure. Hi there! I'm Lobst, I haven't beaten a Pokemon game since X but I love these creatures and the stories told with them nonetheless

Pokémania Catch(-'em-)all Thread

Mainline game history: Red, Emerald, LeafGreen, Pearl, X; haven't beaten generations 2, 5, or 7 yet but I do have a digital copy of Moon I'd like to get into; we'll see if I get around to it before Sword/Shield come out. (And I don't keep a living 'dex, I prefer viewing each region as a microcosm in itself.)

Spinoff game history: Mystery Dungeon Blue Rescue Tea/Explorers of Time/Gates to Infinity. (I like what I've played of Super Mystery Dungeon so far, though)

@Lobst If you do want anything from the Alola regional dex when you do start Moon, let me know - I do keep a full living dex now, and there's some in the Alola dex that can be a bit of a pain.

Pokémania Catch(-'em-)all Thread

@Lobst (a full living dex mostly by virtue of catching everything in the regional dexes since gen 4, transferring things upwards, then realizing I just had some gaps to fill in to make a living dex - mostly middle evolutions)

Pokémania Catch(-'em-)all Thread

@Dex I'll keep that in mind! I have nothing but respect for people who keep and maintain that kind of collection, so if this continues I might end up having that aspiration myself (to whatever extent modern games end up allowing me to, at least)

Pokémania Catch(-'em-)all Thread

@Lobst With trading, catching or seeing them all isn't too hard. However, maintaining a full living dex does take a bit more effort in SM/USUM due to the way some of the legendaries were handled - it required some careful GTS trades with legendaries I'd got from previous generations for me
