sonic frontiers
maybe it's an attempt to stop people from getting too hyped - but it's swung so far in the other direction that it's now firmly in "wait for reviews" territory for me
(arguably it should have been there anyway after forces - i very rarely trade in games, but forces was one of the few exceptions to that)
sonic frontiers
the marketing somehow remains a mess
demo at summer game fest under heavy NDA, sure - but it's out in the open rather than in a private room so even people taking videos of other games are getting in trouble
while birdsite tries to analyze the photos that did accidentally get out trying to see if there's a speedometer on the HUD
like i don't remember any sonic game before that's run into these kind of issues
saints row (2022), #FeelBoss
i feel like this is as good as i'm getting without the final game to see what other options are available in terms of full face coverings - given that boss factory is missing a lot of the helmet options that have been in the trailers
non-binary flannel + saints; can you tell that i like purple
(it's a good thing i do because i might need the respect bonus :v )
consumerism,
the air will absolutely do 95%+ of what i'd do regularly (particularly given that i'm currently primarily an ipad user*), it's just that last bit of "if i decide to run VMs on it"
but apple silicon isn't particularly good at that regardless (at least not when going across architectures), so i guess it'd be better to repurpose a current x64 machine for that rather than square peg, round hole
* the ipad's limitations being a lot more of a brick wall at times
consumerism,
very much struggling to decide between the new macbook air and last year's macbook pro
like the new air is cheaper, but it's not that much cheaper after configuring it
the additional ports on the pro are nice (and i'm not a fan of the air having the usb-c ports on the same side as magsafe), but my usage of hdmi or SD is low in laptops that have those features (save work laptop's HDMI) and i have a dongle
i do like the air being smaller but i also like hdr/120hz
sonic frontiers, genuine opinions
i think my genuine biggest worry here is... in this state, this looks like a tech demo and not much else
there's only two sonic games i've really thought that about before - some of the various incarnations of sonic x-treme (which obviously never turned into anything more), and 06 - things like that early footage where they showed off the game's really impressive day and night cycle that didn't end up making it into the final game

revising my opinion downwards after that combat trailer, which is making me long for the werehog
we've known doing this exact thing hasn't worked since 06, sonic's standard moveset just isn't built for this and it looks repetitive even in what's ostensibly meant to be a hype generating trailer?
the only fun looking thing there is the "colossus" fight, but i don't feel like it's adding anything to this genre of bosses beyond the boost

(I know some people were happy to do the shrines for their own sake, I like having a big something to head towards and do the optional activities on the way)
I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt for now until we see more - but seeing this has kind of made me appreciate the sense of "pushing you forwards" that other sonic games have due to its absence in this trailer

it is difficult to judge from these 7 minutes and subsequently i'm not sure why sega thought this was the best thing to put out to start with
it seems mechanically fine, but also the words that came to my mind while watching are "sedate" and "aimless" - to compare to BOTW, a. the signposts presented here aren't as compelling or interesting as the shrines, and b. there's no Divine Beast analogue shown here to provide a big thing to work towards
