I can absolutely see why some people aren't into the gameplay here, because they don't like the idea of categorizing traversal as gameplay and they're used to open-world games that are built to ferry you from objective to objective with a minimum of effort. So they see a game like this and think "this is unnecessarily cumbersome and there's nothing to do" when overcoming the obstacles that make it cumbersome is the entire point of the exercise

It reminds me of when I heard a game reviewer lament how many side missions in Mirror's Edge: Catalyst were about getting from point A to B. Neither that nor this nor Spintires or Snake Pass are for everyone, of course

Related to LB: yeah, this sucks and is inexcusable! I hope it's limited to this one text file!

I've seen takes amounting to "but this attitude is justified by how bleak and dangerous life is in the UCA!"; this reasoning is as specious as attempts to justify the eugenicism in BioWare games. Lore is intentional and changeable; it exists in service of the message a story wants to tell, and the story is for us in the real world, not residents of DS's fantasy world

(by BioWare eugenicism I mean Mass Effect's Krogan genophage and Dragon Age's mage culling. "But would eugenics be justifiable if some quality essential to this set of people was naturally warlike or dangerous?" Well, congrats on dreaming up circumstances constructed to attempt to justify massive human rights violations; now that I've answered 'no', how am I meant to apply the ideas communicated by this to our actual reality?)
